Mics

Microphones come in a multitude of sizes, shapes, types and applications. Every microphone has it's stengths and weaknesses. If you are new to recording sounds of any kind, the vast array of microphones available to buy can seem overwhelming and confusing. There are condenser microphones with diapragms both large and small. There are dynamic microphones, some for the stage, some for the studio, some for both. Ribbon microphones, measurement microphones, shotgun microphones, cardioid, omni and figure of eight microphones. In the face of such an array of possible solutions, how do you decide which is the right mic for you?
There are three main types of microphone technology. These are dynamic, condenser and ribbon. Each of these types of microphone has their respective strengths and weaknesses and can be selected to give the best results for the particular situation to be used in. The main difference between dynamic and condenser microphones is in how their diaphragms work. All microphones have a diaphragm, think of it as the electronic equivalent to the ear drum and you won't go far wrong. The diaphragm is usually found at the end of the microphone, pointing towards the source of the sound to be captured. Diaphragms range in diameter from just a couple of millimetres to over an inch.
It is believed by most audio engineers that the best type of microphone to record the human voice is a large diaphragmed condenser microphone with a cardioid pick-up pattern. When we describe pick-up patterns, we are talking about the relative sensitivity of the microphone to sounds coming into it at different angles. A cardioid pattern means that the microphone will pick up sound well to the front of the diaphragm, not quite as well to the sides, and will drastically reduce the pick up of sound coming into the microphones rear.
We stock microphones form all the major manufacturers and are always happy to have our customers audition them within our showroom. Amongst the brands we stock are - AKG, Audio Technica, Beyerdynamic, DPA, MXL, Neumann, Peluso, Rode, Rupert Neve Designs, sE Electronics, Sennheiser, Shure and Violet Design.
