Genelec: The Richards Group

The Richards Group's Outpost Post Production Division Uses Genelec 5.1 Surround 8250A DSP System for Their New Audio Mix-to-Picture Studio

The Richards Group, a multi-platform advertising creative agency in Dallas that has done award-winning commercial work for clients including Chic-Fil-A, Amstel Light, Motel 6 and Bridgestone for television, radio, print and interactive formats, has put the finishing touches on its newly opened audio mix-to-picture facility: a Genelec 5.1-surround 8250A Bi-Amplified DSP monitoring system including the Genelec 7271A Active Subwoofer. The Genelec system was sold by Spunky Brunone of Irving, Texas-based The Audio DAWg, Inc. The new studio, designed by noted facility designer Russ Berger and part of The Richards Group's Richards Outpost Post Production division, opened in late March and also features an Avid Pro Tools HD|3 digital recording system and 24-fader Avid D-Command digital mix console. Since then, the studio has been heavily scheduled, living up to its business plan to keep more of The Richards Group's audio work in house.

Besides great sound and extremely accurate imaging, the 8250A bi-amped DSP system was chosen for the advantages that Genelec's acclaimed AutoCal automated calibration system and Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM) control network bring to audio facilities of all types. "What you can do with the GLM system is really incredible - it's as flexible as it is accurate" says Mark Murray, Audio Engineer for Richards Outpost, who researched the systems chosen for the new studio. Using the GLM software installed on the studio's computer, he is able to refocus the Genelec 5.1 system's sweet spot for anywhere the client is sitting in the room. "In that sense, it really allows us to personalize the room for each client or engineer" he explains. "That makes it a valuable feature for a number of reasons."

Referring to the glass divider that partitions off the studio's vocal booth on the right side of the control room, Murray says he has the capability to use the GLM to create a stereo image using only the right front and right rear speakers of the 5.1 system to give a producer who wants to sit directly across from the talent in the booth the ability to enjoy an accurate stereo image without having to come back to the middle of the room. "This ability to shoot the sound over to wherever the client wants to be in the room is fantastic" he says. "The great sound and incredible flexibility of the system really make this studio a great new addition to our facility."
