Softube was founded in 2003 as a developer of digital signal processing algorithms for the pro audio industry. In addition to the Softube range of plug-ins there are several products currently on the market manufactured by well renowned companies that have been based on the Softube's core technology - which is "the simulation of analog circuits through physical modelling." Or in simpler terms they look at the circuit board, components used, the schematics of the hardware, and lots of mathematical equations to give a mirror image of the unit being simulated.
Softube are responsible for some quite reputable plug-ins, some of which you may already have in your software arsenal.
